With just a few short days to go and the good people of Derby and beyond busy making sunflower creations we took the opportunity to chat to our Craftivist Rebecca Hobbs, about joining the team and what she’s most looking forward to seeing when we premiere The (not so) Quiet Revolution of Kindness at this year’s Derby Festé.

Rebecca joined us in the summer, just in time to help us start the sunflower revolution at our LaunchPad event in June. She’s a freelance artist and events consultant and she specialises in innovative and creative solutions incorporating drawing, text, collage, performance, sculpture, installation, sound, photography and film, phew! She has worked with a host of clients across the East Midlands including Curve, De Montfort and Leicester University and we were delighted when she got on board with The (not so) Quiet Revolution of Kindness. She’s developed our Craft Pack, which you have downloaded in your droves, and has helped deliver workshops to sunflower makers including a recent event at St Martins School which forms part of their 50th Anniversary Celebrations. (They’ll also be getting a sneak preview of the show on Friday as part of their celebrations too!)

Here’s what Rebecca had to say in response to the questions we posed to some of our team…

  • What drew you to want to join Hubbub on The (not so) Quiet Revolution of Kindness

I was hooked after the first meeting! How can you not feel the energy and enthusiasm and not be drawn in? The concept is so worthy of communicating and one close to my heart. Then when you meet the team of performers you simply fall in love with everything they do!

  • What is the one best thing about working with Hubbub?

After having a personally traumatic year, I found myself emerged in this group of people that welcomed me with open arms. In one session, everyone was encouraged to participate in the warm up session. During the breathing exercises I suddenly became really emotional. It was then that I realised I had been desperately trying to keep going for so long that I had forgotten to just pause and reflect on all the emotions going on inside me until that moment. And that is what makes Hubbub such a special organisation. They have a knack of tuning in to each individual’s needs and bringing out what that person needs most.

  • What are you looking forward to most on the performance day of The (not so) Quiet Revolution of Kindness at Derby Festé?

I’m looking forward to seeing the Iron Gate area awash with everyone’s beautifully crafted sunflowers! You cannot help but feel better when you see sunflowers so that on top of the amazing Hubbub performances will be sure to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

  •  Give us your favourite #RandomActofKindness slogan.

I have two! (Is that allowed?)

You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Because that’s what kindness is. It’s not doing something for someone else because they can’t, but because you can.

We do hope you can join us on Saturday 29 September and see Derby’s Iron Gate awash with sunflowers as the city joins our revolution of kindness.

Performances last approximately 30 minutes and begin at 1.30pm3.30pm and 5.00pm. Starting at Derby Cathedral the promenade show will makes it way to Derby’s Market Place and the performance will conclude on and around the city’s famous Waterfall Stage.

Inspired by the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) movement, our show makes a bold statement about how we can change our own lives and others’ lives through small gestures of kindness.

Come and join this theatrical revolutionary march where our ensemble of performers with and without learning disabilities will delight you with their unique show involving circus and original music… and a message of kindness…
