A call out for two Residency Placements, worth £2,000 each, have been announced as part of Hubbub Theatre’s new Dance Development Project, funded by Arts Council England, supporting professional dance and movement artists to develop their inclusive practice. The residencies are on offer for any dance artists or dance companies based in or working in Derby or Derbyshire.
The Residencies will enable the selected dance artist or company to develop their inclusive practice as a co-learning and skill sharing opportunity working alongside the Hubbub team and community. They will be invited to perform their own work at the venue, plus an opportunity to facilitate a professional dance workshop for other local dance artists. The Residencies will be tailored collaboratively to each dance artist or company. The deadline for applications is 13th May 2026

About Hubbub’s Dance Development Project Hubbub Theatre’s programme of Dance Development activity follows successful grant funding from The Arts Council England, a Small Arts Grant from Derby City Council and contributions from other local partners. The Dance Development Project aims to celebrate and develop diverse leadership and to support professional dance and movement artists in developing their inclusive practice.
About The Residency This residency is for the dance artist or the company to develop their inclusive practice and work with and alongside the Hubbub team and community. It is a co-learning and skill sharing opportunity in which the dance artist / company will also be invited to perform their own work at the venue. The details of each residency will be worked out in a collaborative and bespoke way with each dance artist / company. There would also be the opportunity to facilitate a professional dance workshop for other local dance artists.
Who we are Hubbub Theatre Company is a Derby-based integrated theatre company established in 2012. Based at Chapel Street Arts Centre in the Cathedral Quarter of Derby, we work across Derby, Derbyshire, the East Midlands and beyond, creating fully integrated physical theatre & dance projects and performances with learning disabled, autistic and / or neurodivergent actors & performers. Through performances, training and community programmes, Hubbub brings people together to devise engaging and accessible physical theatre using movement and music to tell human stories. Hubbub also has an extensive community programme and holds wellbeing, equity and kindness at the heart of all that it does.
Who are we looking for? We welcome applications from regional dance artists or companies, at any stage in their career with a focus on Dance and Movement. We are particularly interested in hearing from artists or companies who feel that they have barriers to accessing professional dance opportunities and are under-represented in the dance world.
What we mean by ‘Residency’ and What selected dance artist or company can expect?
The residency means you will spend a fixed period at Hubbub’s home base – Chapel Street Arts Centre in Derby (up to five consecutive days preferred). The residency will be an opportunity for you to immerse yourself and your practice in Hubbub’s inclusive dance/movement practice, and for you to share your practice through:
- Workshop facilitation for Hubbub Theatre Company and/or Hubbub Dance collective
- Facilitating/leading a professional dance workshop for other local dance artists and dance leaders
- Showcasing your performance work at Chapel Street Arts Centre – solo programme or part of a collection of performances, depending on the dance artist/company selected. Technical and marketing support will be offered.
